About Me.

Hi! Im Denise. It's great to meet you!

I am currently a senior at Rollins College earning my Bachelor's in Anthropology. I am of Puerto Rican and Dominican descent, as I am a child of immigrants and a first generation college student. I hold much pride in my Afro-Caribbean roots and they shape much of my work. As a former military child, I have had the privilege of living in more than 5 cities and attending 10 schools before completing my undergrad. Therefore, I have developed a strong passion for anthropological work centered around movements, rituals, memory, place, selfhood, and the sacred. In terms of methodology, I often gravitate towards cultural relativist ethnography, photo voice,  urban archeology, and structured/unstructured interviews.

What is "my beautiful entrapment"

My beautiful entrapment is my own personal guiding philosophy that is interwoven through most of my work. Drawing from the sociological concept of a black woman's life as a cycle of entrapment, where no matter what we do to advance as a collective or individual, there is always something in the way--wether that be institutional or affective obstacles. Thus, I make intentional efforts to produce work that better depicts and contributes to the current scholarship around Afro-Caribbean Feminism and other related topics. Because the most hated and underserved person in America, and perhaps the world, is the black woman.

The goal of this website is to serve as a living and breathing documentation of my work thus far, as prospective graduate student in pursuit of an Anthropological Doctorate Program, upon completion of my undergraduate studies at Rollins.
